Landslide threat shuts down Konkan line

The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) briefly restored train service between Padil and Thokur on Mangalore-Goa sector on Sunday, before suspending it for 48 hours, following a warning against possible landslides..
According to sources in the Konkan Railway Geology department, the side of a hillock between Padil and Thokur had become loose and might slide down on to the track, posing a danger to passengers. The area was experiencing intermittent rainfall.
Geologists in the department warned the KRCL regional offices in Palakkad and Karwar against the possible landslide. Following the warning, train services were suspended from 10 pm on Sunday to 10 pm on Tuesday.
Heavy earth moving machinery has been re-deployed on the stretch and personnel of the railway safety inspectorate were still stationed at Thokkur near Mangalore.
Earlier, train service between Padil and Thokkur was restored around 5pm, and the KRCL rescheduled the train times. Trains from Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Ernakulum were asked to run slow on the 21 km stretch between Manjeshwar and Surathkal, to help railway engineers to monitor and re-adjust the tracks.
The first train that passed through the line after the restoration was the Okha-Ernakulum (Train No. 6337).

Make your "ink" invisible: the quickest way to get rid of your tattoo—plus, how to score long, full lashes in a single swipe
Shape, July, 2009 by Carly Cardellino
Q I tattooed my boyfriend's initials on my arm, but now that we're over, I'd like them gone. Help!
A Multiple laser treatments will remove your tattoo in most cases, "but it won't happen overnight," explains Cameron Rokhsar, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City. "Depending on the tattoo's size, it takes anywhere from three to 12 sessions--each costing $300 or more [not covered by insurance]--before the mark fades completely." The laser penetrates your skin and breaks up the ink particles, which are then absorbed by your body. Although the procedure, usually performed with a pigment-specific laser, is relatively painless (a local anesthetic is injected to numb the area), the heat generated by the instrument may cause soreness and blistering. A week or two later, a scab will form, then fall off--and the tattoo will begin to lighten. Before you take the plunge, keep in mind that not everyone is an ideal candidate for laser tattoo removal. Dark designs are difficult to remove from dark skin since the laser can't distinguish the ink from the skin. The same holds true for erasing white or yellow tones from fair skin. Consult a dermatologist to see if the process will be effective for you.
Q My eyelashes are so thin. What can I do to make them look fuller?
A Using a mascara that promises volume and length is the quickest way to create fuller fringe. Choose a thickening formula with a curved wand to elongate hairs. (We love Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara, $14; clinique.com.) It's also wise to handle your lashes with care so they don't fall out and appear skimpier: Pick a mild makeup remover, such as Lancome Huile Douceur Remove-All Deep Cleansing Oil ($35; lancome-usa.com), and swipe gently with a cotton pad.
Willing to spend a little time--and cash--for longer-lasting results? The FDA recently approved a prescription-only serum called Latisse ($120 for a 30-day supply; latisse.com for physicians). "It has bimatoprost [a drug originally used to treat glaucoma], which stimulates and prolongs the growth phase of lashes," explains Paradi Mirmirani, M.D., a dermatologist in Vallejo, California

Benzene Related Diseases - Leukemia
There have been documented dangers of benzene for well over a century now. Even though benzene exposure often leads to leukemia, there are also many non-cancerous diseases that have been shown when exposed to elevated levels of benzene. Some of these other diseases include:
Myelodysplastic syndromes: also called ?pre-leukemia?, this is a collection of diseases resulting in diminished blood production and can weaken the immune system. This can result in leukemia.
Non-Hodgkin?s Lymphoma: this is a disease affecting the lymphatic systems and shares many similarities with leukemia. It can eventually affect the bone marrow in addition to other organs.
Aplastic Anemia: this is a condition where the marrow in the bone stops producing enough blood cells to replace lost ones.
Even though these diseases are not leukemia, they have strikingly similar resemblances. The victims who suffer from them many times can?t tell the difference. Even with proper care and treatment, victims of these diseases face an uphill battle exposed to pain and suffering.

Senior citizen 'village' in the works for Georgetown
Senior citizen 'village' in the works for Georgetown

Senior citizens living in Georgetown soon might have a new way to stay in their homes rather than moving to retirement communities or assisted-living facilities, thanks to a nonprofit co-op called a "village."
Eighteen such villages have sprung up in the Washington area over the past several years, making it a hot spot for the movement that started in Boston a decade ago.
Villages provide volunteer services, discounts for local businesses, social activities and transportation to members who pay monthly fees. Whether a senior needs computer training or a ride to the airport, volunteers can help, say village organizers.
Now Georgetown is expected to get its own village through the efforts of Sharon Lockwood, a 69-year-old Georgetown resident and retired World Bank economist.
Lockwood, who has lived in her Georgetown home for 42 years, first learned about the concept at a community meeting two years ago. She signed up for an e-mail list, became a member of the Capitol Hill Village to learn more, then started work on a village for Georgetown.
"I love Georgetown. I want to stay. Where else do you have the better restaurants?" she said. "Everybody wants to stay in their home. Nobody wants to be shipped off."
The Georgetown village has an advisory board, a board of directors and four committees, all composed of volunteers

Green tea helps a lot for weight loss by increasing the level of fat oxidation and thermogenesis (burning of body fat to create heat). Catechins in the green tea help to inhibit the movement of glucose into fat cells. This prevents high insulin spikes and the subsequent fat storage.
As bottom line, green tea helps you with weight loss by suppressing your appetite, regulating your blood sugar, boosting your metabolic rate and giving you something else besides that high calorie. It?s not magic- Green tea definitely boost your health and reduce your weight!
Wishing you the best of health!!!

Speaker; Hazleton, Pa. – Hazleton Area Works To Refund Taxpayer Money
Hazleton Area Works To Refund Taxpayer Money

Hazleton Area School District can reopen its budget and refund the estimated $800,000 to $1 million generated from property tax increases in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties, school officials say.
Now, school officials are working to determine the best way to get that money back into the hands of taxpayers.
The district has two possibilities for returning money to taxpayers, but neither is likely to materialize until next year's tax bills are prepared, Business Manager Anthony Ryba said.
Ryba spent the past week working with Hazleton Area Solicitor Chris Slusser and state education officials to determine whether the district can reopen its budget and adjust its millage rate to reflect a tax refund.
"There's legislation passed with the (state) budget that does allow you to open the (local school) budget," Ryba said. "(Slusser) felt it allows you to levy taxes."
Ryba said he also checked with state education officials, who concurred with Slusser.
But this year's tax bills have already been issued and several taxpayers have paid, a scenario that Ryba said could create problems for issuing refunds. Plus, the school district would have to pay about $32,000 to re-print and mail a new set of tax bills, he said. Refunds would range from a low of $6 to a few properties that would be eligible for as much as $1,000, he said.
After talking with state officials, Ryba proposed two scenarios the district can pursue for returning money generated from the tax hikes.
The first would tack an additional property tax rebate onto next year's Homestead exceptions

U.S. Email Marketers Now Leading Producers Of Unwanted Bulk Email
Business Wire, July 31, 2007
SURREY, British Columbia -- LINUXMAGIC: According to the latest statistics coming from Internet Service Providers (ISPs), 'Commercial Email Offerings' have now taken over from the traditional types of spam as the leading source of 'Unwanted Bulk Email' (UBE) being sent worldwide.
This so called, 'Grey Area Spam' has gotten so rampant that in some cases recipients are receiving up to 20 offerings per day from the same marketing company. Although many of these companies are compliant with CAN-SPAM (a U.S. legal requirement for commercial email marketers to follow), the amount of email that they send is so prolific that it is costing businesses an estimated $10 billion each year. These cost include technical expenditures and lost productivity in order to deal with the unwanted email.
Dean Russ, Chief Technology Officer of DSL Extreme, a division of Ikano Communications Inc based in Salt Lake City Utah, believes that the majority of unwanted bulk email that his company blocks for customers comes from email marketers and not the more traditional forms of spam.
"Email coming from marketers is now accounting for 72 percent of the unwanted bulk email that our company has to divert away from customers," said Dean. "This unwanted bulk email has enormous cost implications to ISPs and network operators. It has been an annoying problem to deal with for both us and our customers. Users often accidentally subscribe to 'Third Party Offerings' but don't know how to stop it. Now that we allow blocking of 'Commercial Marketers' our costs have gone down, and customer satisfaction has gone up."
Wizard IT, a leading Canadian anti-spam solutions provider, is on the front lines of the battle to stop UBE. Michael Peddemors, President of Wizard IT, strongly supports and believes in the rights of people to limit the amount of emails they receive from marketing companies.
"The daily statistics that we receive at Wizard IT have proven to us that bulk email marketing has become so rampant that we have to be able to say 'no more commercial offerings', just the same as calling the post office and asking to stop all conventional junk mail. Our listing of email marketers, called MIPSpace, helps Internet Service Providers and email operators do the same thing for email marketing. MIPSpace has become much more popular because of the increasing volumes of this sort of mail," said Michael Peddemors.
While legitimate commercial email does have its benefits for both businesses and consumers, many marketers have abused email technology to such an extent that some people refer to all commercial email as spam.
"Users are receiving so many unwanted emails and they often don't remember signing up to receive a particular offer, or they unknowingly signed up for a third party offer when they bought tickets on-line to see their favourite rock band or booked their last vacation," said Matt Webb, Sales Manager at LinuxMagic, producers of 'MagicMail' email servers. He added, "We announced last week that our ISP class MagicMail servers will now all be shipped with MIPSpace technology because email marketing has reached such an all time high
Levy on shops to fund town centre facelift
Levy on shops to fund town centre facelift
0 Comments | Northern Echo, Jul 28, 2010 | by Lucy Richardson
RETAILERS could buy into an initiative to make a town centre more upmarket.
A proposal is being put forward to turn the shopping heart of Middlesbrough into a Business Improvement District (Bid) to encourage higher-spending customers to part with their cash.
Forty town centre businesses have shown an interest in signing up, which would involve them paying a levy based on the rateable value of units in the Bid zone.
If enough shops vote in favour of the scheme, the tax would become mandatory and be treated as a statutory debt.
The first Bid in the UK was launched in 2004 in Kingston upon Thames and, since then, 90 bids have been approved in towns, cities and industrial estates across the UK.
Newcastle voted in 2008 for a city bid called Newcastle NE1, raising nearly [pounds]1.5m in levy per year.
Alan Weston, Middlesbrough town centre manager, said a one per cent levy would bring in about [pounds]290,000 and a 1.5 per cent levy would yield about [pounds]435,000, which would be spent on enhancing the area.
"There is certainly an interest in this idea, " he told Middlesbrough Council's regeneration and economic development executive yesterday. "It is all about promoting and protecting Middlesbrough, making small-scale improvements on the ground that could make all the difference."
The scheme will aim to attract more and higher-spending customers through advertising and Christmas lights, ensure that the town centre is cleaner and greener and attract more cafes and restaurants.
A report produced by the council stated that any bid should focus on the town's retail core, which contains more than 62 per cent of the town centre properties and more than 65 per cent of the town's rateable value.
It could also include Centre Square, the town hall, mima art gallery and Central Library.
"Teesside Park is now the fastest-growing retail park in the country, and that's something we need to consider and move Middlesbrough further forward to catch some of that spending from the surrounding area, " said Mr Weston.
The executive supported the proposals and will receive further updates before any Middlesbrough Bid ballot is held.

Bill Gates, Donald Trump, J. K. Rowling, Jeff Bezos, Michael Dell, Warren Buffet and Wayne Huizenga each got rich in a completely *different* business, didn't they?
Take a look around you...
There are people right in your own community, right now, right this very moment, who are getting rich in every conceivable business, aren't there?
So...
Since a little thought and observation easily proves you can get rich in any business, the question then turns to one of...
What's the #1 best business for *you* to get into if you want to get rich?
As a general rule, you'll get rich most easily in a business that uses your strongest abilities, skills or talents whether inborn or developed.
In other words...
You'll get rich most easily in a business that uses the natural or developed abilities, skills or talents you *already* possess.
For example...
If you have strong mechanical ability, you'll get rich most easily in a business that makes use of your mechanical ability.

Those who realize the
Those who realize the Truth will continue to cultivate until they have ended the cycle of reincarnation and returned to the ultimate and eternal peace in Heaven.
We have to tolerate all unpleasant things and love all with the right compassion. Be diligent in the search, be ready to seek and let the Truth guide on. In today?s society, many have claimed to be cultivating the Way, thinking that they will be much to gain but along the journey, there are thousands of demons and millions spiritual tests. Only the one who is fit and strong may survive these tests but the weak may go through if he is persistent or fail. It is Heaven?s advice that not only the Heavenly Beings wish to get into man?s heart, the evils are also making their attempts. In all events, one must continue to strive for the right course and strive hard in order to find the path. Only by hard work will fruits be borne.
As one searches one may fall back and all will be wasted. With tolerance one?s knowledge and wisdom will be widened and deepened. Cultivation may be in two parts. Firstly, attaining a stage of stillness, thereby the mind will be calm.
